Spotlight On: KANENE PIPKIN of THE LONE BELLOW
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Over the last two years of interviews I've done for SHEROES, there are just a handful that focus on a band member, not the front person. The thing that makes these conversations that much more interesting is putting a spotlight on someone not usually given one, especially when that person is such an integral part of the band’s sound and songwriting, and when that someone is a woman. The Lone Bellow is a trio that was formed about a decade ago in Brooklyn, with singer-songwriter Zach Williams, singer and guitarist Brian Elmquist, and singer and multi-instrumentalist, Kanene Pipkin. Their acclaimed self-titled debut arrived in 2013, followed quickly by their Americana Award nominated 2014 album Then Came The Morning, produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, who would return as their producer on their fourth album, 2020’s Half Moon Light, the follow-up to their Dave Cobb produced third album, Walk Into A Storm, which coincided with the band’s relocation to Nashville. Throughout The Lone Bellow’s career, Kanene has been their vocalist, co-writer and composer, mandolin player, bassist, and keyboardist. And now, as The Lone Bellow return with their fifth effort, and first self-produced album, Love Songs For Losers, she adds another title to her resume: vocal producer.
