ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Defining what home is, figuring out where we want to call home, and for many, returning home, has been a central theme the past couple years. But when returning home also means returning to ancestral lands, it takes on a new level of spiritual meaning and depth. Katherine Paul, aka KP, who records as Black Belt Eagle Scout, grew up in the Swinomish Indigenous Community on the Puget Sound in what is now Northern Washington State. Inspired by grunge and riot grrrl music that she discovered in middle school, KP moved to portland oregon when she was just 17. She cut her teeth playing in several bands, working as a talent buyer at a music venue, working with Girls Rock Camp, and launched her career as Black Belt Eagle Scout, releasing her debut Mother of My Children in 2017, and At the Party With My Brown Friends in 2019. After over a decade of living in Portland, KP returned home to Swinomish in 2020. The songs that ended up becoming her brand new album The Land, The Water, The Sky, documents that journey, and we celebrate its release as KP joins us as this week’s SHERO in the spotlight.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate Regina Spektor’s birthday on 2/18, Rhiannon Giddens and Nina Simone’s birthdays on 2/21, and Little Simz’s birthday on 2/23.

This week’s Radio SHERO: Jet, morning cohost at 88.5 The SoCal Sound, Los Angeles, joins us this week, spinning the track “New Day” from Sunny War.
