Spotlight On:HANNAH HOOPER OF GROUPLOVE
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
(radio hour featured interview and podcast)
To hear singer, songwriter, keyboardist, visual artist, and co-founder of the band Grouplove Hannah Hooper, tell it, there was what she calls “a Disney story” quality to their beginnings. And actually, it does come across like that. An indie rock fairy tale with cute little birds and a love story of two American kids - a visual artist and a musician - who go to Greece on an artist’s retreat, literally start making beautiful music together, find more friends to join in, sprinkle the fairy dust, and Grouplove was born. A self-titled EP is recorded and independently released in 2010, is quickly discovered and a record deal and full length album, Never Trust A Happy Song follows the next year, and goes Gold. Suffice it to say, it was meant to be because Hannah - the visual artist in our fairy tale - and Christian Zucconi - the musician - are now happily married, are parents, and fourteen years in, Grouplove is a super successful band, who have just released their sixth album, I Want It All Right Now. And while it does all sound like a fairy tale, it’s the hard work of being a mutually supportive team, band family, and partners that is at the center of it all.
