Spotlight On: SASAMI
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Sasami Ashworth, better known as SASAMI, is a classically trained musician and composer, and now one of the most buzzed about indie rock artists today. An insanely talented guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and performer, SASAMI has also done scoring and orchestral arrangements for films, commercials and studio albums, and worked as a music teacher in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. In 2015, she joined the band Cherry Glazerr, playing synths and touring with them for two and a half years before announcing her departure in January, 2018 to pursue her solo career. SASAMI’s self-titled debut arrived in 2019 to critical acclaim, and this year her sophomore album Squeeze is one of the most anticipated releases in indie rock. Soon, she will be out on the road opening for the likes of Mitski and Haim. The new album just dropped, so this is perfect timing to have SASMI here with us as our SHERO in the Spotlight.
Our playlist includes new music from Mitski who just dropped her sixth studio album Laurel Hell. Plus, new stuff from Sharon Van Etten and Lady Wray!
SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate the SHERO birthday of Erykah Badu on 2/26, plus her iconic album Baduizm is 25 this month. Sharon Van Etten shares a birthday with Erykah, and Karen Carpenter would have been 72 on Wednesday, 3/2.
This week’s Radio SHERO: Jade from The Current joins us as our Radio SHERO, spinning a new track from The Beths called “A Real Thing.” Jade tells us, “Liz Stokes, the lead singer of New Zealand band, The Beths calls the new single ‘a kind of anxiety dream.’ It's one part worries about climate change, one part worrying about the elections in New Zealand and the US. With "A Real Thing" Stokes said, ‘I was limply reaching for optimism about the future, but was really just marinating in dread.’”
