Spotlight On: REGINA SPEKTOR

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Growing up in the Soviet Union, Regina Spektor began her classical training on piano at age six. Three years later, her family emigrated to the States as refugees, settling in New York City, where her musical journey would continue and eventually bring her to some of its most hallowed stages, like Carnegie Hall, but not as a classical musician. Within 10 years, she was writing songs, self-releasing her debut album 11:11 in 2001. That album just marked its 20th anniversary last year, and after some vinyl production delays will be reissued in a special box set this August. By 2006, Regina had a gold record, her fourth called Begin To Hope, and what has followed has been a wildly successful career that has borne seven albums, not to mention countless song appearances in TV and film, including the Grammy nominated theme song for the popular Netflix series, Orange Is The New Black. This week on SHEROES Radio we celebrate Regina Spektor’s much anticipated return with her eighth studio effort, Home, before and after, and welcome her as this week’s SHERO In The Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Warpaint and Tank & The Bangas.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate the SHERO birthdays of both Solange and Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval on 6/24, plus Carly Simon on 6/25.

This week’s Radio SHERO: Stacy Owen of WFPK in Louisville joins us this week, sharing the track “The Only Way Out” from soul singer and songwriter Danielle Ponder.
