Spotlight On: TEGAN AND SARA
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Just a few weeks ago, Tegan And Sara were here on the show to guest host an interview with one of their high school era musical SHEROES, Ani DiFranco. It was amazing timing, leading up to the premiere of the new TV show based on their memoir High School on Amazon Prime. Now, Tegan And Sara are back with their tenth studio album and first in six years, Crybaby. Those have not been idle years by any stretch, and if you’re a fan, you know they always have something happening. There’s too much to list here, but for those not familiar, Tegan and Sara Quin are Canadian identical twin sisters who began writing songs in their early teens, and released their debut Under Feet Like Ours in 1999. Within a year, they were signed to Neil Young’s label Vapor Records, who put out their second proper album, This Business of Art in 2000. As it was rare in those days for artists to be openly queer, Tegan And Sara became trailblazers for LGBTQ+ musicians. It was incredible to witness their career take off. When their fourth album, 2004’s So Jealous dropped, they were truly put on the international map, helped along by the White Stripes covering their song “Walking With a Ghost.” While their 2007 fifth album The Con is often name-checked by many as their most iconic, it was their seventh release, Heartthrob that became their biggest album to date, winning three JUNO Awards, and shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. It’s the tenth anniversary of that album this year, and as you’re about to hear, their new album Crybaby could be its sister. I am thrilled to welcome back Tegan And Sara as SHEROES In The Spotlight.
