Spotlight On: basia bulat
ABOUT this week’s guest:
Canadian folk singer songwriter multi-instrumentalist and producer Basia Bulat last joined us on SHEROES back in 2022, just as she was releasing her last album The Garden - orchestral reimaginings of sixteen of her songs from across her catalog which stretches back twenty years this year to her self titled debut EP. Basia grew up in Ontario, the daughter of a music teacher. Early on she sang in choir and played several instruments with school bands and orchestras including the upright bass and saxophone, and as she became known as a songwriter and performer in her own right, added the autoharp to her arsenal. Basia’s full length debut Oh My Darling was released in 2007, and was shortlisted for the coveted Polaris Prize, followed by her 2010 album Heart of My Own, which was also nominated for the Polaris - an honor she would repeat again with her third album Tall Tall Shadow in 2013, also nominated for a Juno Award. 2016’s Good Advice and the Juno-nominated Are You In Love? released in 2020, were produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket. And then her gorgeous aforementioned album, The Garden, which saw her both revisiting her whole discography and her beginnings as a classically trained musician. Now Basia is back with her seventh full length album and first of all new original material since 2020, called Basia’s Palace, and we’re thrilled to welcome her back to the SHEROES Spotlight.
