Spotlight On: miya folick
ABOUT this week’s guest:
This year marks a decade since Miya Folick released her debut EP Strange Darling. At the time of its release, Jon Pareles of the New York Times spotlighted the album saying: her gift is capturing the uncertainty, temptation and impulsiveness of those brief but fraught junctures, with music that tells as much of the story as her lyrics. That gift has been evident in each collection Miya has released since, which now includes three EP’s, her 2018 critically hailed full length debut Premonitions, and her last studio album, 2023’s Roach. Raised in Santa Ana, California, Miya is half Japanese half Russian, and grew up in a Buddhist household. She says she is a latecomer to music but everything about her work says that she was born to be a musician. After a brief stint studying acting at NYU, and then USC, Miya began building her career from the ground up in Los Angeles, having the genius idea to use the dating app Tinder to connect with LA musicians, and formed a band. Her newest album, Erotica Veronica has been highly anticipated by fans and press alike for the last few months, and at long last, it is here. This week, we celebrate its arrival and welcome Miya Folick as our SHERO in the Spotlight.
