ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
One of the biggest bands to kick off the decade in 2010 was Icelandic indie folk rockers Of Monsters and Men, with their internationally successful multi platinum debut My Head Is An Animal. The band exploded onto the scene and their ubiquitous hit Little Talks was everywhere. They put out their sophomore effort Beneath the Skin in 2015, and 2019 saw the release of their third full length, Fever Dream. The six piece band’s origin story takes us back to their front woman’s late teen years, writing and performing as a solo project called Songbird. Nanna got her first guitar at 13, and immediately began writing songs. In just a few years, she was playing her songs in loud pubs, accompanied only by her acoustic guitar, and after a move to Reykjavik, Nanna finally decided to get loud herself. And while initially she was adding musicians to build on her sound as Songbird, little did they know that the seeds were planted that would grow into the band Of Monsters and Men. While enjoying the success of her band, Nanna also continued writing songs that didn’t quite fit that project, and after a series of life events that left her a bit ungrounded, as well as a forced break due to the pandemic, Nanna found the time and space to step out on her own for her first solo album under her own name, titled, How To Start A Garden. And while this is a return to where this all began, we’ll hear how this solo debut is also a culmination of the past decade and a half of her own growth as a musician, a songwriter, and a producer. We celebrate its release - perfectly timed with the spring - as Nanna joins us as this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
