ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

You know those huge albums that when they hit, the music is just EVERYWHERE? In the early 2000’s, Joss Stone’s The Soul Sessions was THAT. And for good reason. We were all wowed by the blonde-haired young teenager from England who sang like a seasoned soul singer from another era. The 2003 album went multi-platinum, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize the following year. Her second album Mind Body & Soul came out in ‘04, also going multi platinum, and at 17, Joss Stone was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys, and nabbed two other nominations for the album and its single. She also became the youngest British female singer to top the UK Albums Chart. Throughout her career, Stone has sold 15 million records worldwide, establishing herself as one of the best-selling soul artists of the 2000s, and the best-selling British artists of her time, and she’s earned two Brit Awards and one Grammy Award out of five nominations. Now with seven albums to her name, as well as a collaborative album with Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart and Damian Marley as SuperHeavy, Joss Stone has already had a long career. During the pandemic she began a Facebook video series called Cooking With Joss, and a new podcast about happiness, and I spoke with her just a couple weeks prior to the birth of her first child.

Our playlist features new music from newly-minted Golden Globe nominee, Andra Day, SHEROES alum Arlo Parks, and the first taste of the new Flock of Dimes album coming in April. We also celebrate two SHERO Birthdays this week: Irma Thomas is 80 on Thursday 2/18, and Beth Ditto is 40 on Friday 2/19.

The Radio SHERO of the week is Bruce Trujillo from Indie 102.3 in Denver, Colorado who closes the hour with her guest DJ pick “Congelo Con Calma” by La Dame Blanche.
