Spotlight On: DEEP SEA DIVER
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Jessica Dobson started playing guitar when she was still a child, and trying her hand at writing songs. As a teen who was passionate about her electric guitar and skateboarding, Jessica found a supportive community of musicians, including the late Richard Swift, who helped her record demos and land a major label record deal in her late teens. Sadly, her first two albums would never be released. In the wake of this bad first professional experience, many would have thrown in the towel. Instead, Jessica Dobson began recording as Deep Sea Diver, and made a name for herself as a sought-after touring guitarist. Her enviable resume includes a stint with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spoon, Beck, and working with her old pal Richard Swift in The Shins, a band she became an official member of. Deep Sea Diver now has two EP’s and three full length albums out, including last year’s critically hailed Impossible Weight, which topped many 2020 year-end best of lists - including my own. Hear Jessica Dobson share her journey of coming into her own, embracing both her vulnerability and her power - as a woman and as an artist.
Our playlist features new music from Canadian singer/songwriter Tamara Lindeman aka The Weather Station, an introduction to newcomer and SHERO-To-Watch Hannah Jadagu, and the return of Loretta Lynn who celebrates women of country music on her upcoming 50th studio album. We’ll hear the first offering off the March 19th release - a duet with Margo Price.
This week’s SHERO birthdays include Sharon Van Etten who turns 40 on 2/26, and Chilli of TLC, who turns 50 on Saturday 2/27.
Finally, our Radio SHERO of the week, Jade (newly anointed Music Director!) from affiliate station The Current joins us to share her guest DJ pick “Impostor” by Miss Grit.
