ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

The band Lake Street Dive formed, as many bands do, in college. Bridget Kearney, Rachael Price, Mike Calabrese, and Mike “McDuck” Olson joined forces in the mid-2000’s at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, while studying jazz. But while many college bands fade out after graduation, Lake Street Dive got signed to Signature Sounds Records, moved to New York City, and within a few years grew into an even bigger record deal with Nonesuch. In 2017 the band expanded to a five piece with the addition of Akie Bermiss and prior to the pandemic, Lake Street Dive had become a hugely successful touring band. Over fifteen years since their college beginnings, and Lake Street dive is going strong. The seventh album called, Obviously, was just released, and to celebrate, I invited singer-songwriter Rachael Price and bassist-songwriter Bridget Kearney to talk about the new album, their journeys as musicians, and feminism.

Our playlist features new music from St. Vincent, new Japanese Breakfast, Brooklyn punks Pom Pom Squad, and new Rhiannon Giddens..

This week’s SHERO birthdays include Miki Berenyi of Lush who turns 54 on 3/18, and Patty Griffin, celebrating her 67th on 3/16.

And our Radio SHERO of the week, Taylor Wallace of KUTX in Austin joins us to share her guest DJ pick “Bikini Girls With Machine Guns” by The Cramps.
