Spotlight On: FLOCK OF DIMES
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
The insanely talented multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Jenn Wasner first came on our radars in the mid 2000’s with her band Wye Oak, a duo she co-founded with bandmate Andy Stack in Baltimore, Maryland. Since their 2007 debut If Children, Wye Oak has released six albums, as well as a string of singles and the 2020 EP No Horizon. But far from being Jenn’s only project, she established a solo career under the moniker Flock Of Dimes in 2016, became a sought after studio and touring musician, and grew a long list of enviable collaborators, including the most recent Bon Iver tour that saw Justin Vernon name her as an official new member of the band. She also began producing albums for others. For someone with their hands in so many projects and such an astounding creative output, the pandemic brought Jenn Wasner’s lightspeed career to a grinding halt, and simultaneously, personal heartbreak. But, as artists do, she turned her pain into something extraordinarily beautiful. Her second full length album as Flock Of Dimes is called Head Of Roses, and as we celebrate its release this week, Jenn Wasner joins us as this week’s SHERO In The Spotlight.
Our playlist features new music from Colombian band Bomba Estereo, a track from Japanese Breakfast’s upcoming new album, and an amazing Sharon Van Etten cover by one of her SHEROES, Lucinda Williams, off the new covers album Epic Ten celebrating the tenth anniversary of that landmark SVE album.
This week’s SHERO birthdays include Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto (4/5), and Billie Holiday (4/7).
