Spotlight On: LONDON GRAMMAR
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
The UK indie dream pop trio London Grammar initially met each other at University, and got their start as a band just over a decade ago. Led by the stunning vocalist and songwriter, Hannah Reid, the path to success was quick, and soon, massive. Their debut EP Metal & Dust arrived in 2013, quickly followed by their full length debut, If You Wait which immediately brought several awards nominations, including a Brit Award for Best New Artist, an Ivor Novello Award and two AIM Independent Music Awards. London Grammar’s follow up, 2017’s Truth Is A Beautiful Thing, became their first number one album in the UK, and Top 20 on the Billboard charts here in the US. But beneath all of the success and accolades, Hannah Reid was growing acutely aware of the innately misogynist nature of the music industry, until finally, she nearly quit. Lucky for us, Hannah channeled her suffering and frustrations into the songs that would become their eagerly awaited third album Californian Soil, a new high water mark for London Grammar. As we celebrate its triumphant arrival this week, Hannah Reid joins us from London to be this week’s SHERO In the Spotlight.
Our playlist features a newly released Angel Olsen song, an instant classic by Allison Russell from her upcoming solo debut Outside Child, a fave from the new Julien Baker album, and an earworm by Panamanian singer-songwriter Sofia Valdes.
SHERO Liz Phair’s birthday is on Saturday 4/17, so we’ll spin a track off her landmark album Exile In Guyville.
Alisha Sweeney of Indie 102.3 in Denver joins us as this week’s Radio SHERO, and spins an amazing new Pixies cover by Tkay Maidza.
