Spotlight On: JULIEN BAKER

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Every once in a while, there is an artist that emerges and immediately garners deep reverence and respect from fans and critics alike. Venues become hushed and spellbound places when these artists play, and each new album arrives as a must listen. Julien Baker is one of these rare musicians, with an astonishing voice and powerfully vulnerable songs that deal with heavy yet very real topics of spirituality, addiction, love and heartbreak, and striving for personal redemption. Growing up in the Bible Belt as a queer teenager, Julien found music as a means to find her identity, her community, and healing for herself and others. Now in her mid-twenties, Julien is the definition of wise beyond her years, and her third album, Little Oblivions, takes an unflinching look at recent struggles with sobriety and her own career. We talk about her journey to making this album, recovery, and reconnecting with the healing power of music.

Our playlist features a newly released song by Andra Day, a taste of the 70’s throwback vibes of St. Vincent’s upcoming new album, brand new music from Lucy Dacus, and the new Palehound x Jay Som supergroup Bachelor.

SHERO birthdays this week include Ella Fitzgerald (Sunday 4/25), Ann Peebles (Tuesday 4/27) and Lizzo (Tuesday 4/27).

And Nilufer Arsala from KXT in Dallas joins us as this week’s Radio SHERO, and spins a track by a Dallas local artist, Ellen Once Again.
