Spotlight On: SHUNGUDZO
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
An absolutely extraordinary multi-hyphenate, Shungudzo is a Zimbabwean-American poet, singer, songwriter, and producer, who also started out as a gymnast on the Zimbabwean National Team, and was on track to be a professional ballerina before changing course and enrolling at Stanford University to study engineering. Dropping out of Stanford to pursue music full time, Shungudzo became a successful songwriter for others like Little Mix and Jessie Ware, among others. Her recently released incredible self-produced debut album I’m not a mother, but i have children is an outspoken and honest collection of personal and socio-political songs and poems, meant to make us think and feel, and inspire positive change. Shungudzo is this week’s SHERO In The Spotlight.
Our playlist includes new music from Little Simz, Molly Burch and WILLOW. Plus a gorgeous track called “Blouse” off of Clairo’s brand new album Sling.
This week’s Radio SHERO: Adrienne van der Valk, host of Feminist Hotdog on Loudspeaker FM joins us to spin a cover of one of her favorite songs, “Slippery People” by one of her favorite bands, Talking Heads performed live by Mavis Staples featuring Arcade Fire. For Adrienne, since the beginning of the pandemic, this track has served as a reminder that everything’s going to be okay.
