Spotlight On: ADIA VICTORIA
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
The artistic polymath Adia Victoria hails from the South Carolina town of Spartanburg, and was raised in a religious household. Ballet, acting, and poetry writing were her creative outlets, until a friend gave her a guitar in her early 20’s and the blues took hold. After a stint in Paris, New York City, Atlanta, and finally landing in Nashville, Adia Victoria found her passion in writing indie-blues songs, often gothic tales of the deep south. Her full length Atlantic records debut, Beyond the Bloodhounds arrived in 2016, followed by the Aaron Dessner-produced album Silences in 2019. 2020 saw Adia Victoria adding a new creative format to her repertoire as host of her podcast Call and Response, which is now back for a second season, as she was also writing, recording, and co-producing her third album A Southern Gothic with T Bone Burnett. This week on SHEROES Radio we celebrate the release of A Southern Gothic, as Adia Victoria joins us as this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
Our playlist includes new music from Silvana Estrada, plus a new track called “Phoenix” from Aoife O’Donovan.
SHERO BIRTHDAYS:
We celebrate four SHERO birthdays this week! Happy Birthday to both Brittany Howard and Gillian Welch on 10/2, and to Gwen Stefani on 10/3. And Happy Birthday to Millie Small who we lost just last year; the SHERO would have been 75 on Monday, 10/6.
