Spotlight On: CARTEL MADRAS

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

The hip hop duo Cartel Madras was formed just four short years ago by Eboshi and Contra - two sisters from Chennai, India, who immigrated to Calgary with their family as kids. Raised on a combination of south Indian music, their father’s record collection of Beatles, ABBA and Marvin Gaye, their own musical touchstones ranged from The Shins and Fleet Foxes, to Freddie Fibbs, Das Racist and M.I.A. Finding inspiration in punk, Eboshi and Contra crafted Cartel Madras out of a vision for what their live performance could be, simultaneously writing the songs that would become parts one and two of their Goonda Trilogy - a series of mixtapes that along with their amazing self-produced visuals showcase their multidisciplinary approach, subversive lyrics and rapidly evolving sound. Now signed to Sub Pop records, Cartel Madras has just released the third in that trilogy, The Serpent & The Tiger, and Contra joins us to talk about their journey thus far, and what is behind the Goonda rap and artist collective she and her sister have created. Cartel Madras is this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Hatchie, AURORA, and Wanda Jackson, plus a brand new track called “Easy On Me” from Adele.
