Spotlight On: AIMEE MANN

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Singer-songwriter, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, label-owner Aimee Mann was born in 1960 in Richmond Virginia. At twelve she was stuck at home, sick and bored, and found her brother’s unplayed guitar in a closet. It was from that moment Aimee became a dedicated student of music. But it was the bass that she truly fell in love with, and not seeing other women making the music she wanted to make further motivated Aimee to spend a few semesters at Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was there where she found her community, and her future bandmates in ‘Til Tuesday. They put out three albums between 1982 and 1988, and then Aimee went solo. Now ten albums into her career, Aimee Mann has always put her songcraft and artistic vision first. In the late 90’s, just before the game-changing Magnolia Soundtrack, and Aimee’s third solo album Bachelor No.2  arrived, she left her major label, founded SuperEgo Records, and proceeded to nab her first three Grammy nominations, an Academy Award nomination, and a Golden Globe Award nomination. Aimee now has six Grammy nominations and two awards to her name, including one for her last album, 2018’s Mental Illness. This week on SHEROES Radio we welcome Aimee Mann for a SHEROES conversation, as we celebrate the release of her tenth album, Queens of The Summer Hotel.

Our playlist includes new music from Lorde, plus a newly recorded version of Bonnie Raitt’s cover of “Angel From Montgomery” from the recently released tribute album for John Prine called Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS:
We celebrate six SHERO birthdays this week. On Sunday 11/7, Joni Mitchell turns 78 and Lorde turns a milestone 25! On the following day, 11/8, Happy Birthday to Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Minnie Riperton, and SZA!

This week’s Radio SHERO:
Ida Hakkila from Radio Kingston joins us this week to share her DJ pick, “To the Top” from the band SUNDUR, whose name means “apart” in Icelandic. But for Ida, the track feels much warmer than remote.
