Spotlight On: COURTNEY BARNETT
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Back in 2013, a CD (yes, a CD) with a simple hand drawn cover by a newcomer from Australia named Courtney Barnett landed on my desk with the curious and clever title: The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas. The first single, “Avant Gardener,” over five minutes long and with no apparent chorus, was an immediate, if not unlikely, radio favorite, and the entire album was addictively good - full of clever wordplay, tender and honest everyday observations, that were deceptively deep. And seeing her perform live with her trio, shredding her left-handed guitar, it was clear: Courtney Barnett was destined for big things. Her full length debut arrived in 2015, called Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit, and it wasn’t long before Courtney Barnett was a household name. That album won four out of the eight ARIA Award nominations it received in 2015, and the following year, she was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy’s and Best International Female Solo Artist at The BRIT awards. Tell Me How You Really Feel, her second full length album, arrived in 2018, and this week on SHEROES Radio, we shine the Spotlight on Courtney Barnett, as we celebrate the arrival of her third; Things Take Time, Take Time.
Our playlist includes the latest music from Little Simz and Jenny Lewis, plus the title track from Snail Mail’s brand new album Valentine.
