Spotlight On: JUDY COLLINS

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Judy Collins is truly an icon. With her signature clear and soaring voice, the multi-GRAMMY winning singer, songwriter, activist, and author has been performing and recording since the early sixties, and now, six decades into her career, she remains a vibrant and creative force. In the past six years alone she has made her highest Billboard 200 chart debut, and received another GRAMMY nomination. She also continues to tour heavily, and when touring came to a standstill, Judy of course, did not. Always one to challenge herself, Judy recorded her first album of original material called Spellbound, her 55th album and her 6th in six years. Many of the songs were written in the past two years, and they document her life story, including growing up in Colorado, her love life, and experiences she has had with substance abuse. She also launched her own podcast, and has started writing another book. At 82, Judy Collins gives new meaning to the word prolific, and as the woman who kickstarted the careers of Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, and many others by recording their songs, her passion for discovering the next great song still burns bright, and now those songs are her own. Judy Collins is this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Wet Leg, My Idea, and Oumou Sangaré.

This week’s Radio SHERO: Kari Hedlund of KAXE/KBXE joins us to spin a track off of Big Thief’s new, massive masterpiece of an album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, called “Time Escaping.” Kari says the track “has a great swirly energy with a bit of departure from what you’d maybe expect, which sort of fits in perfectly to their new album.”
