Spotlight On: BASIA BULAT

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Canadian folk singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Basia Bulat grew up in Ontario, as the daughter of a music teacher. Early on, she sang in choir and played a variety of instruments with school bands and orchestras, including the upright bass and saxophone, and as she became known as a songwriter and performer in her own right, added the autoharp to her arsenal. Basia’s full length debut Oh My Darling was released in 2007, and was shortlisted for the coveted Polaris Prize, an honor she would repeat again with her third album Tall Tall Shadow in 2013, also nominated for a JUNO award. Her last two albums, 2016’s Good Advice and Are You In Love? released in 2020, were produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and once again, Basia received a JUNO nomination for her last album. Now bringing together songs from her entire discography and her beginnings as a classically trained musician, Basia Bulat has just released The Garden: orchestral reimaginings of sixteen of her songs. And as spring is upon us, it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate its arrival and welcome Basia Bulat as our SHERO in the Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Tank & The Bangas, and Sudan Archives.
