Spotlight On: IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Singer, composer, and Ibibio Sound Machine frontwoman Eno Williams was born in London and raised in South Eastern Nigeria, in the city of Lagos. After returning to London for university, Eno met her future bandmates in Ibibio Sound Machine which was founded in 2013, and became an eight person band that fused African and electronic elements into a sonic landscape of highlife, West African funk and disco, a dash of new wave and punk and electro and techno. At the heart of their music is the rhythmic pulse of songs written by Eno Williams in Ibibio - the language of Southeast Nigeria and her ancestral roots. Ibibio Sound Machine’s self-titled debut was released in 2014 and since signing with Merge Records, the band put out their second album Uyai in 2017 and their third Doko Mien in 2019. Now Ibibio Sound Machine have evolved their sound even further with their fourth release, Electricity, produced by Hot Chip. We celebrate its arrival and welcome Eno Williams as this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Soccer Mommy, Horsegirl, Adia Victoria, and Silvana Estrada.
