Spotlight On: MAIA FRIEDMAN
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Our featured conversation this week is close to my heart, not only because our guest is a beloved friend of mine, but because of the personal journey she took to finally release her solo debut called Under The New Light this year. The story of multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter Maia Friedman is not a dramatic one, but is a powerful and all too common example of the unspoken, insidious ways that young girls and women can struggle early on with finding our way in music, developing confidence in our own voice, and freeing ourselves of what Maia calls “the default”. We will hear Maia share her story, and describe how despite struggles with crippling self doubt and depression, she persevered and manifested her musical dreams and aspirations time and time again, including becoming a touring and recording member of one of her favorite bands, Dirty Projectors. The quiet triumph of releasing her debut is embodied with its cover - a photo of Maia Friedman at twelve years of age, already dreaming of this moment when she would release an album of her own. Maia Friedman is this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
