Spotlight On: BEDOUINE

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

I’m happy to say that SHEROES has now been going on long enough that we are starting to have artists return for a second SHEROES interview. When I last sat down with Syrian born and Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Azniv Korkejian it was 2019, and she had just released her second album as Bedouine called Bird Songs of a Killjoy. 2020 brought us a few gorgeous covers, and then in late fall of last year, she released Waysides, her third full length album. I caught up with Azniv a couple months ago to talk about the new album, which sees her revisiting some orphaned songs that, when strung together, create a sonic scrapbook of sorts, like snapshots of the last fifteen years. Far from solely looking back, the process of reworking this material with so much more experience under her belt gave Azniv a glimpse of where Bedouine might be headed next. And as we just marked the 5th anniversary of her stunning self-titled debut, and with her birthday coming up on July 16th, this felt like the perfect moment to welcome back Bedouine as our SHERO In The Spotlight.

Our playlist includes new music from Beyoncé, who just announced that she’ll be releasing a new album Renaissance at the end of this month.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate the SHERO birthday of the late great Mercedes Sosa who was born 7/9 in 1935 and passed away in 2009. And Happy Birthday to the living legend Mavis Staples on 7/10!

This week’s Radio SHERO: Jade from The Current joins us this week with a new one from Zambian born, Australian based artist Sampa The Great, called “Never Forget” - a song that Jade tells us “reflects on the musical legacy of Africa and is an ode to zamrock music.”
