Spotlight On: ALLISON RUSSELL
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Canadian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell's career began in the early 2000’s with her first band Po’ Girl. After nearly a decade and six albums with that project, Allison formed Birds of Chicago with her husband JT Nero. And just a couple of years ago she co-founded Our Native Daughters with Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Amythyst Kiah. It was during that time that the songs which would become Outside Child, Allison Russell’s critically hailed solo debut, would be written and recorded. A deeply personal collection that explicitly addresses Allison’s experience as a survivor of childhood physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, but more than that, it is an inspiring document of healing, strength and joy. Usually this segment of our show is about 25 minutes long, but we felt that this interview was far too important to cut short. So in this very special edition of SHEROES Radio, we bring you a two part conversation with Allison Russell, this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
Our playlist features new music from Shungudzo off of her latest album I’m not a mother, but I have children. Plus a brand new song from Lorde called “Solar Power,” her first new music since 2017’s Melodrama.
SHERO BIRTHDAYS:
