Spotlight On: LITTLE SIMZ
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
British-Nigerian artist Little Simz hails from London, and grew up doing theater before picking up her pen and developing her incredible skills as a rapper, and then teaching herself guitar and drums in college. An undeniably gifted and highly prolific artist, Simz put out four mixtapes and five EP’s between 2010 and 2015, before independently releasing her full length debut A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons in 2015, quickly followed by Stillness in Wonderland in 2016. Fast forward to 2019, Little Simz earned an Ivor Novello Award, an NME Award, and a Mercury Prize nomination for her third album GREY Area. All of this while she was building a busy acting career as well, including a recurring role on the Netflix series Top Boy. The pandemic, far from slowing her down, saw Simz craft the introspective songs that would become her stunning new fourth album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. This week on SHEROES radio, we celebrate its release with an in depth conversation with Little Simz, our SHERO in the spotlight.
Our playlist includes new music from Wet Leg, Wanda Jackson, Shannon Lay and La Luz. Plus a brand new cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” from Courtney Barnett.
This week’s Radio SHERO: Jessi Whitten from Indie 102.3 in Denver shares a track that she says has acted like therapy lately as it “perfectly matches the rage she’s been feeling;” it’s “I’m Enough” from Rhode Island punk rockers Downtown Boys.
