Spotlight On: TKAY MAIDZA

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Tkay Maidza was born in Zimbabwe in the mid-nineties and moved to Australia at age five. Though both of her parents are scientists, Tkay’s father was also a musician, and her uncle a Zimbabwean singer-songwriter, so music surrounded her from a young age. While training intensively as a competitive tennis player, Tkay started to teach herself how to lay down instrumental tracks and sing and rap over them. Songs posted to YouTube quickly gained attention, and in 2013 while in her first year studying architecture at University, Triple J Radio began playing a single that then spread like wildfire, and record labels started calling. It was a fast rise. 2016 brought her multiple award nominated debut Tkay, and since then Tkay Maidza has gained international acclaim for her recordings, live performances, and colorful videos. Within the last five years she released a trilogy of critically hailed EPs, the latest called Last Year Was Weird Vol. 3. Tkay Maidza is this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
