Spotlight On: JULIA CUMMING OF SUNFLOWER BEAN

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

It's always a treat to have guests on the show for the first time who I have known for a few years. Not only because there’s an inherent comfort there, but also because so many of these conversations about inequality or sexism in the music industry have been ongoing with artists and industry folx and were a major inspiration for starting this show. I'd often think, “this is a conversation I wish the world could hear.” So this week, that wish comes true with Julia Cumming of Sunflower Bean. I have been a fan from the jump of this New York City band, and especially of their bassist and frontwoman Julia Cumming. Over the past seven years or so, it’s been exciting to watch their fast rise from buzz band at SXSW, to landing a record deal, to releasing their incredible debut Human Ceremony in 2016, followed by Twentytwo In Blue in 2018, the EP King of the Dudes in 2019, and this year, their third full length album, Headful of Sugar. I’m happy to welcome Julia Cumming of Sunflower Bean as this week’s SHERO In The Spotlight.

Our playlist includes “A Little More Love” from the late great Olivia Newton-John who just passed away on 8/8.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate the SHERO birthdays of both Madonna and Emily Strayer of The Chicks, who turns 50, on 8/16, and to both Belinda Carlisle of The Go-Go’s and Phoebe Bridgers, who turns 28, on 8/17. Plus Happy Birthday to Arcade Fire’s Régine Chassagne who turns 45 on 8/18!
