Spotlight On: LAURA VEIRS

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SHERO IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Laura Veirs is a Portland, Oregon based multi-hyphenate, and it seems that each time I catch up with her, she has added another creative endeavor to her résumé. For over twenty years, Laura has been a singer, songwriter and guitarist, who now has released twelve albums under her own name, including this year’s Found Light, which sees her adding “producer” to her name for the first time, as she recently parted ways with her longtime producer and husband Tucker Martine. She is also one third of the supergroup case/lang/veirs with k.d. lang and Neko Case, and has collaborated with, and written for, the likes of Mavis Staples, Sufjan Sevens, The Decemberists, and First Aid Kit, to name just a few. She is a children’s book author, a songwriting teacher, has created and manufactured a deck for creative writers and songwriters called Kaleidoscope Creativity Cards, and hosted a podcast called Midnight Lightning, talking to musician parents. Not to mention having her own label, Raven Marching Band Records, and raising two kids of her own. I'm thrilled to welcome Laura Veirs as this week’s SHERO In The Spotlight.

Our playlist includes a new cover of an old Joy Division favorite from Amythyst Kiah, plus one called “Burning” from the upcoming Yeah Yeah Yeahs album Cool It Down which arrives next month.

SHERO BIRTHDAYS: We celebrate the SHERO birthday of Garbage’s Shirley Manson on 8/26, plus SHEROES Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, Florence Welch, and Meshell Ndegeocello all share a birthday on 8/29!

This week’s Radio SHERO: Emma Philippas, Production Assistant on SHEROES Radio, joins us as this week’s Radio SHERO, spinning the track “Madeline” from Yo La Tengo’s 2000 album And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out.
